Update on Junoon Concert
Eversince the split-up, the Junoonis rarely get to hear the good ol’ Junoon songs in the concerts. Now, mostly only the new songs from the Ali and Salman’s solo albums are performed to promote sales of both the albums.
On Thursday, 24th November however, the concert was a big treat for all those who wanted to hear the Junoon songs, as no new songs were played. The touring trio now features the veteran Mekal Hassan on Bass, in place of the legendary Brian O’Connell. Although the calibre of Mekal is shared by only a few talented musicians in the country, it still seems something is missing without Brian…..Maybe that “Spirit of Junoon” is not the same as before.
The concert marked the 15 year celebration of Junoon’s journey and featured the hip, old catchy tunes like Neend Aati Nahin, Khwab, Dosti, Khudi,Sayonee, Pappu Yaar, Heeray, Garaj Baras,Yaar Bina, Lal Meri, Mahi and others.
Salman’s performance was better than I’ve ever seen! He showed the best of his talents in the Instrumental Heer which also featured a jam with Ustad Ashiq Ali on tablas. Ali Azmat, as always, was at his peak and irresistible to the crowd, while it seemed that Mekal was making an effort to follow through on the bass. Things were oh so good in the days of Brian! The concert overall reminded of the days when Junoon used to perform throughout the week and every show was jam-packed!
At the end of the show, Salman Ahmad spoke about the aftermath of the great earthquake in Pakistan and appealed everyone to donate for rehabilitation of those affected by the quake.
He ended the show by playing and singing Jazba-e-Junoon, dedicated to those affected by the Earthquake and playing the National Anthem of Pakistan, which was accompanied by an astounding performance by Ali Azmat on drums!
All in All, a really memorable show after a long long time.
Ali Azmat announced his solo performance to be held in Global Village on 1st December.
See you there…!!
