Determination Beats Adversity

Alia Majid Ebrahim Al Mutawa, who topped in the UAE and in the Science stream in the Grade 12 exams, with some of her medals and awards at her home in Dubai’s Nad Al Hammar district

Alia Majid Ebrahim Al Mutawa is inspired by her mother – a university student in UAE.

Alia Majid is one of two students who scored the highest 99.9 per cent in her Grade 12 exams,

Her father, an army officer she never knew, died when her mother was just three months pregnant with her. A homemaker, her 36-year-old mother Sajida Ali Al Jabri, raised Alia and her elder sister on their father’s pension.

The harsh realities of life, however, did not stop Alia from emerging the UAE topper in the Science stream. It instead inspired her to give her best, she says.

As the toppers of the public schools grade 12 exams were announced Sunday by the Ministry of Education, their home in Nad Al Hammar was filled with joy.

siham ebrahim aka Umm Ra'afat

Siham shot into popularity across the Arab world by winning Dh250,000 in the Arabic version of the game show, Who wants to be a Millionaire, on the pan-Arab satellite channel MBC.

Umm Ra’afat, as the 52-year-old Palestinian mother of 12 is popularly known, is a treasure trove of general information and has an elephantine memory. In fact she makes a living from her participation in general knowledge-based game shows.

Reflecting the sentiments of many parents across the Arab region that the education system needs changes and upgrading, Siham said she still depends on what she herself studied, in teaching her children, though nearly 34 years have passed since she left school.

“Thank God, I still depend on the information stored in the back of my memory. Some times, “daily pressures of my life make me sometimes drift away from what I am reading.”

  • 1,000 books in Siham’s home library
  • 7,500 questions included in her first book
  • 34 years have passed since Siham left school

Education Most Prospering Industry in Crunch

The Gems group being highly connected to Rulers’ of UAE. Consder themselves Untouchables & above the law & policies of Govt.

Being leaders in Eduction-Business industry in UAE, Gems group is minting money by using diversified front companies.

recently at a meeting held by group of Parents of Our Own English High School it was revealed that the bus company which has the transportation contract is also under ownership of Directors of Gems group. The bus fee hike has multiplied several folds in past 24 months without any rhyme & reason. Parents are forced to comply or else take a TC. Who the people shall turn to, when the owners are connected to the TOP rulers of UAE.

In this crunch time after the collapse of almost 90% of UAE businesses the only booming business (for a while) is education. As soon as session ends, come Vacations, suffering parents will move OUT & send families back to home countries.

But who will put a tab on Gems Group… it is a million dollar question.

who will protect the parents and implement law & put a check on the schools & its transportation systems / contracts.
