Brokeback and angry letters

What is it with 7Days newspaper and its endless cinema campaigns? First Harry Potter, now it won’t stop going on about Brokeback Mountain.

Could the real reason be the absolute deluge of letters that pour in whenever controversial issues such as those relating to Brokeback are raised? 7Day’s readership probably goes through the roof whenever a good, juicy letter war is taking place.

Letter writing in Dubai is something of a cult, particularly as the small population and newspaper readship makes it easy to get a letter printed, and bored expats have time to kill. The difficulty for editors must be spotting the myriad hoax letters they get.

Though like many things here, the reality is often far funnier than the fantasy: the fakes pale in comparison to the genuine wackos writing in.

Writing is a serious business and you can never achieve finesse till you are absolutely crazy about writing.

Most people write either to kill time or to document their experiences but I think its a good thing that people do write….Eventually you can cross that fine line between fakes and genuines (as you say)

But whats wrong about putting Brokeback Mountain on screens in Dubai. If somebody want to watch the movie they can go and watch and people who are opposing it may watch any other movie.

There are bigger moral problems in this society, which need to be adrressed.

7Days letters to editor section is better than Dilbert and the funnies. Especially messages addressed to people like “the *&^% driver in the black Hummer” etc.

Some of the letters are quite witty, even.
